Just to introduce myself, I am withoutmuchconsciousness, and I currently run Dilemmas of a Loner (though they’re both pretty inactive). I’m a Pharmacy student and my group had decided to write a paper on the effects of smoking for the LGBT community. In the middle of reading through all the research material we put together, I sincerely felt alarmed and felt the need to announce this. So let me apologize first if this post offends you in any way. I mean sincere good. 

If you are of the LGBT population, Stop smoking now. 

Cigarette companies have been maliciously targeting the LGBT population to increase their sales. Since the 90’s Philip Morris of the Malboro brand has been providing sponsors to LGBT magazines by putting ads in for their cigs. This has led to a false image to the LGBT community that such large corporations are in support of their identification, which shall lead to other areas of the market to acknowledge  that this population exists.

However, this is not the case. Cig companies purposely include multiple men and women in their ads to blur the dominant heterosexual male image. Yet, the heterosexual population do not realize that such an undertone has been taken. 

Also, they put ads in the bars purposely. You may say that bars are for everyone. It’s to increase overall sales. But research has indicated that many LGBT rely on bars to socialize and therefore, the LGBT are much more prone to those ads. You think that those corporations don’t know this? Oh, I’m sure they do.

We all know that smoking is never good for the body. However, many LGBT don’t realize that still, many insurance companies and medical facilities discriminate against the LGBT population, even in the US. This is obviously wrong, but we are waiting for a law to be passed against such discrimination. But whilst that is being worked on, do you really want to face the dire consequences? 

Lastly, the biggest issue is that the LGBT population thinks that smoking and drinking is almost a given when you are LGBT, to deal with the stress and whatnot. Don’t fall for it. You make the choice. 

So stop now, whilst you still can.

There are programs that will not discriminate and help you quit such as Quitline or the National LGBT Tobacco Control Network. Just google it.

• she told me she said this and I laughed so hard, because that's half of what I do, but hey, I'd say I'm a good listener. =)

I live in CT and Sandy didn’t hit us as bad as the other states. Yet, I’m out of power. UCONN isn’t. So most likely, I’ll have classes starting Wed. oTL
